Open invitation

Doors opened along London’s South Bank for Open Up, an event marking the launch of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Behind the scenes

The activities and opportunities on offer at Open Up were thrilling, engaging and free. But the event was not just about a priviledged insight into culture in the making, it gave people the chance to join in too. Cultural landmarks such as BFI Southbank, the Design Museum, the National Theatre and the SouthBank Centre all offered people the chance to create and explore.

The cultural games

The weekend of events on the South Bank and Bankside were more than a one-off, with events across the UK they mark the start of the Cultural Olympiad, a four year celebration of culture and creativity leading up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Ambitious in scale and intent, the Cultural Olympiad is aimed at enabling the widest range of people across the UK to take part in creative activities.

It’s taking part that counts

Our task was slightly smaller in scale but was still about encouraging people to take part. We’d worked with the South Bank Employers Group before, so knew they were open to ideas. We designed a promotional package along the open up theme, with an envelope sealed with a sticker and enclosing a leaflet. The latter folds out to reveal all the listings and locations on one neat sheet.

Lap of honour

The South Bank Employers Group reported a big turn-out and a lot of joining-in. Signs that the appetite for UK culture is in good health.
