QUERCUS Branding

Identity for European initiative to regenerate urban rivers

Many urban areas are interlaced with networks of rivers that are under used and declining in otherwise thriving built environments and communities. The QUERCUS initiative is an EU funded enterprise that aims to bring these urban waterways back into the life of urban centres across Europe.

Joint initiative

Three local authorities are participating in the pilot scheme that is developing regeneration proposals for a section of the Ravensbourne River in Lewisham, South London, the River Dee in Chester and De Binnendieze in Hertogenbosch, Holland.

River refresh

Each scheme aims to create quality urban environments for river corridor users and stakeholders by:

  • Increasing people’s enjoyment and interaction with the rivers
  • Designing out crime and fear of crime
  • Improving the habitats for wildlife

Visual appeal

We were asked to create a visual identity that the pilot partners could get behind and which represented the aims and aspirations of the project.

Our solution, using an image of a paper boat floating on water, focuses the mind on a fundamental, universal experience. The sensation of setting a hand made boat in sail is something we can recall or imagine and reminds us of the simple pleasures to be had on the water.
