Samuel Johnson Litery Prize Branding

Branding a new litery prize

Lexicon of lore

Named in honour of the renowned writer and lexicographer, the original Samuel Johnson Prize was established in 1999 to recognise the best work of non-fiction in the previous year. It is the UK’s richest prize for non-fiction and, in the space of a few years has grown in popularity and prestige to become one of the country’s leading book awards.

Keeping mum

Initially the award was funded for a three year period by an anonymous benefactor. We were asked by Colman Getty to create a marque and marketing materials for the first award and we then developed this for the award in 2000.

Tv tie-in

In 2004 Colman Getty secured sponsorship of the award from BBC FOUR. We were asked to redesign the logo keeping some of the original flavour but incorporating the identity of the new sponsors.

The prize, now known as the BBC FOUR Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, continues to go from strength to strength.
